Kamal Haasan a tribute as he turns 50

Call him Kamal Haasan or Kamal Hassan or Kamalhaasan, the man, a living legend has turned 50 last week. It’s a milestone for a powerhouse of a performer who made his first screen appearance at four, in the movie Kalatthur Kannamma.

The real big break came with K Balachander’s Arangetram and fine performances followed one another, earning for him awards and accolades. He has experimented with every conceivable role from the village simpleton in Padhinaru Vayathiniley to a psycopath killer in Sigappu Rojakal, a blind violinist in Raja Paarvai, and an out-of-work youth in Varumayin Niram Sivappu.

Over the top entertainment comes easily to him — Guru and Sakalakalavallavan made waves at the box office. Moondram Pirai, remade as Sadma in Hindi, Sagara Sangamam and Swathi Muthyum in Telugu, Nayakan, Sathya, Devar Magan, all proved his acting prowess.

New make-up, looks, roles have always fascinated this actor. He turned himself into a dwarf for Aboorva Sagotharargal and in Avvai Shanmugi he was a South Indian Mrs Doubtfire.

Here’s a birthday bouquet of thoughts on this amazing actor:

Madhavan, actor He is a university where you enroll and study acting. I learned a lot and improved my acting after working with him in Anbe Sivam.

Mani Ratnam, director Kamalahasan believes in doing every film in a unique way. He likes to go into the minor details of the character and makes it not only believable on screen but also commercially viable.

Vikram, actor He’s a living legend. His love for cinema shows in his work. And he’s such a perfectionist. He’s someone we all want to emulate.

Surya, actor For me, every Kamalhaasan film has been a learning experience. I am in awe of the man as he is a one-man acting course by himself.
